The Ken's Commandos are an elite team of retired&nbsp;players at Dunfermline RFC, in Scotland.&nbsp;Originally a team of 3, started by the late namesake member Ken, they keep the club alive, doing all the jobs that no one else wanted to do like clean the bathrooms, clean the club, and rebuild the stand after the storm.&nbsp; &nbsp;

In this story we meet 3 of the current Ken's Commandos, learn their origin stories and what the future of Dunfermline Club looks like with Ken's Commandos by their side.

The Backbone of Rugby - Dunfermline Commandos

We are delighted to announce that, in partnership with Scottish Rugby, Matt Wilson has joined us as a full-time Development Officer. Previously, this role at the club was only part-time.

This is a major step for the club and reflects our ongoing commitment to growing rugby and providing the best experience for all our players, coaches, and members.

Matty brings a wealth of experience to the role. He is our 1st XV captain, our club captain, and U15s head coach, and has been involved in so many areas of the club over the years and has came right through the ranks from minis to seniors. His deep understanding of our players, coaches, and community makes him the perfect person to lead this new chapter.

In his role, Matty will focus on player development, increasing participation across all youth age groups, supporting our coaches, and leading new programs and initiatives designed to strengthen rugby in our community.

Together, Matty and the club have exciting plans in the pipeline—from new initiatives for young players and coaches, to community events, to programs that will benefit all members and the wider community.. This is just the start of some big things to come, so keep your eyes peeled.

Please join us in congratulating Matthew Wilson on his new role and welcoming him to the team. We’re excited to have him on board and look forward to working closely with Scottish Rugby to make a real impact.

Go fund me funds storm damage improvements

A huge thank you once again to everyone who donated to our recent GoFundMe. 

We’re delighted to share the progress your generosity has made possible:

The stand has been repaired, with the trees behind it cut back to open things up and also protect it from future issues.

A brand new gazebo is now in place which is already being used by all. 

The main shower room has also been cleaned and freshly painted, ready for the start of the season. 

All this work has been carried out by our commandos who do all the work free of charge. I want to try to showcase more of the work they do for us as it's often unnoticed. 

We still have some money left over and we will continue to use it for upgrading the changing rooms.

We are excited to announce Andrew Royle as the new Head Coach of Dunfermline Rugby Football Club!

Andy brings a world-class rugby CV to Dunfermline, with decades of experience leading programmes in South Africa, Ireland, &amp; UK. Most recently, he has served as Head Coach &amp; DO at Edinburgh Academy delivering drive elite-level coaching and player development. Now, he brings that expertise to Dunfermline as we build a new era for the club.

Ross Hutchinson continues in his role as Forwards Coach, ensuring consistency and leadership through this new phase.

Martin Scade returns to DRFC as Backs Coach, adding skills and tactical precision to our attack.

We’re also proud to unveil our new Academy, designed to bridge the gap between youth and senior rugby. Our U18s will now train alongside the seniors, helping to build continuity, raise standards, and create a pathway for local talent to rise into 1st team rugby.

To be asked to continue coaching this season as part of Andy’s new coaching setup was an honour. He obviously comes with a high pedigree, having coached at all levels of the game. We have a similar passion for coaching set piece and forwards play.

I'm happy we are maintaining consistency from the last few seasons. Even though there's change, there’s still familiarity—with myself, the captains, and vice-captains continuing. We will continue the upward trajectory of the quality of rugby at Dunfermline.

The new Academy will harness the talent we have coming through our youth teams. The drop-off from U18s has been too high for too long—that’s unsustainable. This setup brings more coaches, more feedback, and a competitive environment where talented players can push the seniors for their jerseys, making us stronger.”

COACHING ANNOUNCEMENT & ACADEMY LAUNCH

This morning, we had the pleasure of welcoming representatives from Howden Scotland to McKane Park for a very special presentation. On behalf of Howden, a plaque was gifted to mark our club’s proud contribution to the legacy of the British &amp; Irish Lions.

Dunfermline Rugby Football Club has had the honour of nurturing two Lions over the years — Angus Black and Jim Greenwood — both of whom began their rugby journeys right here at our humble grassroots club.

Thank you to Howden Scotland for recognising our role in rugby’s rich history. And a huge thank you to everyone — past and present — who continues to give their time, energy, and heart to our club. From players and coaches to volunteers and supporters, this plaque is for all of you.

We are immensely proud of our heritage, and even more excited for the future.

This rugby team has done something truly remarkable – crowned Team of the Year at Dunfermline RFC, triumphing over every side in the club, including youth squads, senior men’s, and women’s teams! (this is only the second time in the club’s history that a mini team has achieved this award)
These young stars have shown that age is no barrier when it comes to teamwork, determination, and passion for the game. From their fearless tackling to their relentless drive, they’ve inspired the entire club and set the standard for what rugby is all about.

DRFC have been embedded in the community of Dunfermline and West Fife since 1893, and are one of the longest standing clubs in Scotland. In that time, the club has gone on to develop teams spanning all ages and genders, supporting the growth of the game at all levels.
